Brook Bower serves as the Assistant Curator for the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts (TCVA) located at Appalachian State University (ASU) in Boone, NC. Bower’s professional activities include curating exhibitions, lecturing, consulting on competition management, serving as a juror for local competitions, mentoring future art management students and managing several national art competitions including the Rosen Sculpture Competition, the Halpert Biennial and the Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition. Bower also serves as the Acting Registrar, providing collections management support for the TCVA’s Permanent Collection containing 1,090+ objects and managing the Intra-Campus Loan Program.

Bower received a BS in Art Management and a BFA in Ceramics from ASU’s Department of Art in 2001. Following her undergraduate degrees, she has concentrated on furthering her education by attending conferences, courses and workshops expanding her knowledge of curatorship, exhibition design, and collections management. Bower also designs and leads museum training workshops. She serves on multiple committees that concentrate on community enhancement utilizing the visual arts. These committees include the Looking Glass Gallery Committee, the Downtown Boone Development Association’s Public Art Committee, the AppalCART’s Federal Transit Authority (FTA) Grant Committee and the Robert F. Gilley Recording Studio Gallery Committee. Additionally, Bower serves as the faculty advisor for the Arts Management Organization (AMO).

In addition, Bower is an active exhibiting artist and is a new member of The Collective On Depot, a work and studio space for local artists and musicians. Her primary media concentration is sculptural ceramics, however, she also delves into other media including collage and photography. She incorporates these media along with alternative techniques to create her unique style. Her most recent body of work entitled Vessels of Consequence, explored parallelism between the physical constraints of the human and ceramic vessels through a combination of ceramics and collage. Currently, she has an on going project documenting and investigating land and culture loss in Southeastern Louisiana in association with the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) located in Cocodrie, LA.
